P003 → Guilty Pleasure - Installation & Publication
„Guilty Pleasure“ is an experience that originally dealt with the pica syndrome (attraction to non-edible objects). Based on this theme, a speculative, utopian-dystopian experience developed, which is set in a context of a future society.
At the center is a device that is inserted into the mouth. The device consists of an exciter, mouthpiece and housing. Through the sound propagation of the jawbone, it is possible to hear through the mouth. The created sound represents the eating of the fictitious meals and gives the participant the feeling of being able to eat the food him-/herself. In addition, the consumption is complemented by an ambient soundtrack through the headphones.
To make the experience more immersive, the dishes are accompanied not only by images and sound but also by smells, which are also mixed to match the dishes.
The played video guides through the three-course menu and is experienced through the described devices (smell & sound).
This paper examines emerging theories of perception and their relation to metabolic processes and presents the interactive installation Guilty Pleasures, informed by these theoretical principles.
The metabolic nature of perception is particularly apparent in the experiences relating to the oral cavity, and this work explores this through an intra-oral electronic interface, combined with other modalities for enacting illusory sensations of eating together with the exploration of the phenomenology of craving and the pica condition.
